Raphael Diaz, Max Pacioretty and Yannick Weber all saw action in the Swiss National League Saturday night. Tomas Plekanec and Tomas Kaberle were idle in the Czech Extraliga and will be back in action Sunday while Alexei Emelin has yet to play for Ak-Bars Kazan of the KHL.

Max Pacioretty made his Swiss League Debut a successful one and with an assist Tomas Plekanec takes over sole possession of the lead in the Czech Extraliga scoring race. Three members of the Canadiens participated in games in Europe over the weekend. Tomas Plekanec and Yannick Weber were stars in wins in the Czech Republic and Switzerland.
Seven members of the Canadiens have memories of the NHL-imposed lockout of eight years ago. Four of them rode out the dispute with European teams, the other three played in North America, two in the AHL and the other, Scott Gomez in his hometown of Anchorage Alaska.
You can argue that the Canadiens will bring eleven defensemen into training camp capable of landing an NHL job. The core group remains but Frederic St. Denis, who was signed to a two-way contract on Thursday, joins a group of five or six with a chance to join the team to start the season.
While the Canadiens need to address depth issues in their goaltending, the future of the Canadiens defense is promising. Andrei Markov and Josh Gorges are the anchors of a defense that broke in two rookies last year – Alexei Emelin and Raphael Diaz last season. P.K. Defenceman Yannick Weber suffered an upper body injury early in the second period of Friday night’s 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators. Frederic St. Denis has been called up from the Hamilton Bulldogs and will be available for Saturday night’s game against the Flyers in Philadelphia.
Canadiens right winger Michael Blunden underwent arthroscopic knee surgery this morning and will be lost to the Canadiens for between 15 and 20 games. Blunden was hurt February 2nd in New Jersey. The surgery decision was made after swelling had gone down and miniscus damage was discovered. The Canadiens also have Yannick Weber to worry about. Weber suffered what appeared to be an injury to his left knee last night against Pittsburgh and was left behind when the Canadiens flew to Long Island Wednesday afternoon. Aaron Palushaj has been recalled from Hamilton to repllace him.
The Canadiens play their eighth and final exhibition game tonight at the Colisee Pepsi in Quebec City looking for only their second win. With a couple of exceptions, they will be icing the team that will be opening the season next Thursday.
Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier’s trip to Slovakia was not totally in vain. Even if he’s unable to sign Alexei Emelin, he managed to land Rafael Diaz, a defenseman from the Swiss National team and EV Zug. He was a teammate of former Canadien Glen Metropolit last season.
