On December 29th in the Czech Republic, Tomas Plekanec twisted his torso the wrong way and suffered a painful rib muscle injury. He was able to finally participate in full practice Wednesday at Canadiens training camp working on a line with Brian Gionta and rookie Alexander Galchenyuk.

P.K. Subban was not at the Canadiens Brossard training facility when their six day camp opened Sunday morning. Subban is locked in a contract stalemate, apparently looking for a long term deal that the Canadiens are not prepared to offer at this stage in his career.

With the six year contract extension for Max Pacioretty the Canadiens now have seven players now hooked into long term contracts. If stability is one of the key factors in building a winner (and it is), then the Canadiens have laid solid groundwork.

P.K. Subban and his agent Don Meehan continue to work on what is expected to be a long term contract. How ‘long-term’ is the question. Subban is coming out of his entry level deal and faces three years of restricted free agency.

The NHL released it’s 2012-2013 schedule this week and the Canadiens will have their hands full avoiding a repeat of last season when they opened with seven losses in their first eight games. It was a losing streak that set the tone for, and ultimately destroyed their season. Also, Carey Price will go to arbitration and Pierre McGuire would trade Subban.

The Canadiens. led by Tomas Plekanec, will have six players participating in the World hockey championships starting next weekend at Stockholm and Helskinki. Plekanec will be representing the Czech Republic for the fifth time.

While the Canadiens need to address depth issues in their goaltending, the future of the Canadiens defense is promising. Andrei Markov and Josh Gorges are the anchors of a defense that broke in two rookies last year – Alexei Emelin and Raphael Diaz last season. P.K. Subban and Yannick Weber were in their second seasons, Behind that, a very deep farm system.
