The Nashville Predators will announce tomorrow that Kirk Muller will become head coach of their Milwaukee Admirals farm team for the coming season. He replaces Lane Lambert who was promoted to an assistant’s job with the parent team. A top candidate to replace Muller on Jacques Martin’s coaching staff will be Hamilton head coach Randy Cunneyworth formerly an assistant with Atlanta and. for eight years, head coach of the Rochester Americans..

KIRK MULLER NEXT SENATORS HEAD COACH?

Ottawa-based Globe and Mail columnist Roy MacGregor speculates that Canadiens assistant Kirk Muller might be considered for the Senators’ head coaching job. Muller’s coaching contribution to the Canadiens has been underrated. Anyone paying attention during that final minute timeout in the Anaheim game Saturday, saw Muller drawing out the six-on-four tactics with Jacques Martin looking over his shoulder. It led to the game-tieing goal by Max Pacioretty with thirteen seconds remaining.

The replacement for Guy Boucher? The rumour mill drums have been banging out a list of candidates for the job. The names we’re hearing most are, from the QMJHL, Rouyn-Noranda head coach and GM Andre Tourigny; Gatineau coach Benoit Groulx, perennial candidate Patrick Roy and Montreal Juniors coach and GM Pascal Vincent. The most mentioned English speaking candidates are Canadiens assistant Kirk Muller and coach of the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones Chuck Weber.

Guy Carbonneau, Michel Therrien and Ken Hitchcock along with the coach of the Devils’ Lowell affiliate, John McLean are also mentioned in dispatches.

Several individuals close to the scene in Montreal tell Slap Shots that assistant coach Kirk Muller is owed much of the credit for the Canadiens’ stunning success in knocking off Washington and Pittsburgh, so much so in fact, that he may well be a candidate to become the Devils’ next head coach
