I wonder what Canadiens CEO Geoff Molson ‘s true thoughts were as he released his “Message” to the fans yesterday. The message was a league approved cookie cutter semi-apology for the “incovenience” of the lockout. Unlike the days when his uncles and grandfather held sway in the NHL, Molson is only a voice in the wilderness
The NHL governors wll meet tomorrow to authoriize a September 15th player lockout. Not only the players will suffer financially. The league’s ten or twelve successfull franchise will also suffer revenue losses, none more than the Canadiens who carry a major debt load.
The Canadiens fired general manager Pierre Gauthier Thursday, just over a week before the worst season in over seventy years comes to an end. While there have been criticiisms of Gauthier’s management style, one thing led that eventually sealed his doom – a league leading rash of injuries to veteran players.
If you go by the Montreal media, Pierre Gauthier is a goner. He won’t be returning for another season as Canadiens general manager, and if we’re to believe them, the next general manager of the team will be Patrick Roy. Just what the Canadiens need, another five year rebuilding programme. Maybe it’s time to take a close look at what the chaos of the last seventeen years has cost the Canadiens.
