The Canadiens first power play goal of the season turned out to be the game winner as the team edged the Sabres 2-1 in Buffalo Friday night.

Josh Gorges one-timed a Roman Hamrlik rolling puck off the post past Ryan Miller to give the Canadiens a 2-0 lead late in the second period. The Canadiens then fought off a sustained third period Buffalo effort that included Derek Roy’s league leading 5th goal, to register their second win of the season.

Did you know the Canadiens have seven players with no-trade clauses in their contracts including Andrei Markov and Roman Hamrlik, both of whom will be unrestricted free agents at the end of this season? The trade restrictions on the two defensemen ends on February first, 2011, meaning the Canadiens can make a deal for them at the trade deadline if they wish. At the end of the coming season, Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier will have to deal with five unrestricted and eight restricted free agents. He will have just over twenty-five million dollars to sign thirteen players with defensemen Markov and Josh Gorges the top priorities.
And indication of the hockey world in the salary cap era, the Canadiens presently are committed to only four contracts two years from now, Gomez, Cammalleri, Gionta and Plekanec. And they are committed to only one contract, Plekanec, in the 2014-2015 season.



THE ANDREI KOSTITSYN PROBLEM

There was an optional practice for the Canadiens today at the Brossard training centre. Among those on the ice, Andrei Kostitsyn, who, on his third shift of the game, was too casual on a play that led to the opening goal of the game and found himself nailed to the bench for the final 55 minutes and 22 seconds of the game.
