CANADIENS SIGN EMELIN TO ONE-YEAR CONTRACT

The Alexei Emelin signing ended four years of contract tag. Emelin preferred to gain experience in the KHL, which is a level above the American Hockey League, while collecting Russian major league pay. Scouts are now saying he has the potential to go directly to an NHL roster.



HABS READY TO SIGN RUSSIAN DEFENSEMAN ALEXEI YEMELIN

Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier is in Bratislava, Slovakia where he is expected to sign Russian all-star defenseman Alexei Yemelin to a 1.75 million dollar contract, including bonuses. Yemelin was drafted by the Canadiens in 2004 but elected to continue his development in the Russian Super League and KHL. Scouts believe he has the ability to step into the NHL immediately.

There aren’t too many P.K. Subban’s and Shea Weber’s around. Most defencemen take five or six years to develop. Alexei Yemelin has now spent six years honing his skills in Russia’s top league. He’s played on two Russian championship teams and he’s currently in Bratislava, Slovakia participating in his fourth World Tournament. His two year contract with Ak-Bars Kazan has now expired. Toronto agent Don Meehan and his Russian associates will now be representing Yemelin for the second time in negotiations with the Canadiens.
