FOUR CANADIENS UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS STILL AWAITING OFFERS

Of the nine Canadiens players who were facing unrestricted three agency at the end of the year, five have received contracts for the coming season. The Canadiens re-signed three of them. Mathieu Darche, Andrei Kostitsyn, Chris Campoli and Jaroslav Spacek are still awaitiing offers.

While the Canadiens need to address depth issues in their goaltending, the future of the Canadiens defense is promising. Andrei Markov and Josh Gorges are the anchors of a defense that broke in two rookies last year – Alexei Emelin and Raphael Diaz last season. P.K. Subban and Yannick Weber were in their second seasons, Behind that, a very deep farm system.



CANADIENS QUESTION MARKS FOR SEASON OPENER

The Canadiens assigned five to the minors today with no surprises in the group. They open their season with some question marks. Carey Price suffering from the flu; Roman Hamrlik has had an injury setback; Michael Cammalleri is suspended and Andrei Markov is still rehabilitating from May knee surgery.



ALEX HENRY ON WAIVERS-Also Curtis Sanford

Size isn’t everything – at least not in the NHL.
The Canadiens placed 6’6” 230 lb. Alex Henry on waivers today along with goaltender Curtis Sanford. Niether is likely be claimed which means they return to the Hamilton Bulldogs for another season. During training camp Henry appeared to be the favourite to win the battle for the final spot on the Canadien defence over Alexandre Picard despite the fact that Picard seemed to be having a better camp.



DEFENCEMAN ALEX HENRY SIGNS TWO YEAR HABS CONTRACT

With the signing of veteran defenceman Alex Henry to a two year two-way contract, the Canadiens addressed a problem they were facing with their Hamilton farm club. With the promotion of P.K. Subban and, in the absence of Andre Markov who will miss the first quarter of the season, perhaps one other Bulldogs defenceman, the American Hockey League franchise was woefully short on defence. The 30 year old, 6’6″ Henry will fill not only fill a gaping hole at the Hamilton blueline, but also bring veteran experience to a young team. Henry’s NHL prospects have been dimmed by a lack of speed.
