The Hamilton Bulldogs, and by extension the Canadiens, have had a great deal of success signing undrafted players to amateur tryout contracts. David Desharnais comes under that category. So does defense prospect Brendon Nash.
The Bulldogs will have Niagara University graduate Paul Zanette in their lineup tonight under tryout contract when they play the Abbotsford Heat. Zanette is one of ten finalists for the annual Hobey Baker Award in US college hockey after scoring 29 goals and 26 assists this season. He was named the Atlantic Hockey Association player of the year and finished his season 2nd in the NCAA in points per game (1.57) and goals per game.
This was a breakthrough year for Zanette, perhaps explaining the reason he wasn’t drafted. He nearly tripled his statistics in one season; his goalscoring jumping from eleven to twenty-nine goals and his points from twenty-one to fifty-five points. Until March, Zanette led the nation in goal-scoring. His 55 points tied a school record for most points in a single season.
