ICECAPS LOSE THIRD STRAIGHT FRIDAY – Lehigh Valley-4 St. John’s-1

1 PHANTOMS iiThe St. John’s IceCaps lost a 4-1 decision to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Friday night all but erasing their faint hopes for a berth in the 2016 Calder Cup playoffs.

Taylor Leier, Adam Comrie, Robert Hagg and Steve Swavely scored for the Philadelphia Flyers affiliate. SPalwavely’s goal was scored into the empty IceCaps net.

Tim Bozon scored for St. John’s.

The IceCaps lost forward Charles Hudon in the first period after an unpenalized heavy check into the boards from former Canadiens Aaron Palushaj.

The teams will meet again Saturday night at Mile One Centre.

Notes

….The IceCaps have lost six of their last seven games.

….This was the first of a season ending six game home-stand for the IceCaps.

….There are currently nine players who played with the IceCaps this season, now up with the Canadiens. Defenseman Brett Lernout was recalled Friday. He along with Darren Dietz and Joel Hanley will be in their lineup Saturday night against the Florida Panthers. Also in the lineup will be Michael McCarron, Sven Andrighetto and Daniel Carr who is just coming off the injury list. Jacob de la Rose just joined the list of injured ex-IceCaps along with defensemen Mark Barberio and Victor Bartley.

….There are three college graduates playing for the IceCaps under Amateur Tryout Contracts (ATO), defensemen Tom Parisi and Chris Joyaux and forward Cory Ward. Parisi, a Providence College graduate, has a two year two-way contract with the Canadiens that will kick in July first. Joyaux spent four seasons at Miami (Ohio) University and Ward played four seasons at Bemidji Stat University in Minnesota.

….Centre Corey Ward assisted on the goal by Tim Bozon. He has three assists in six games with the IceCaps.

….Goaltender Ben Scrivens, who cleared Canadiens waivers on Friday morning and was assigned to the IceCaps did not arrive in St. John’s in time for the game.

….On Thursday rookie goaltender Zach Fucale was named the IceCaps AHL man of the year an award that recognizes his contributions to the community.  He now becomes one of 30 finalists for the AHL’s 2016 Yanick Dupre Memorial award.  The award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward who died in 1997 after a 16 month battle with leukemia.
