LATE GOAL GIVES HERSHEY BEARS WEEKEND SPLIT AGAINST ST. JOHN’S ICECAPS

1 hershey IICentre Zach Sill scored with 55 seconds remaining in regulation time to give the Hershey Bears a 3-2 win over the St. John’s IceCaps Sunday afternoon at Mile One Centre. With the win, Hershey gains a split of the two game weekend series at St. John’s.

Also scoring for the Washington Capitals affiliate were Chris Bourque and Erik Burgdoerfer.

For the IceCaps it was Gabriel Dumont and John Scott.

Hershey outshot the IceCaps 29-25. Eddie Pasquale was again in goal for St. John’s.

On Saturday Bud Holloway’s power play goal in the third period broke a 1-1 tie and gave the IceCaps a comeback 2-1 win over Hershey. Max Friberg also scored for St. John’s. Hershey’s lone goal was scored by Jakub Vrana. Pasquale stopped 22 of 23 shots for the win.

Notes –

….The IceCaps wore white and green jerseys in the two weekend games to celebrate upcoming St. Patrick’s day.

….Sunday’s game completed a six game St. John’s home stand during which they posted a 3-2-1 record.

….Their next seven games will be on the road starting with a three game weekend starting in Utica Friday night and moving on to Syracuse for games Saturday and Sunday. Following the upcoming road trip the IceCaps will be home for six games to wrap up their regular season.

….The loss left St. John’s in 11th place in the 15-team AHL Eastern Conference, two points behind the Portland Pirates who hold the 8th and final Eastern Conference playoff berth.  Portland lost 4-3 to Hartford on Sunday.  The Pirates hold three games in hand over the IceCaps.

….The IceCaps are trying to avoid becoming the fifth straight Canadiens AHL affiliate to fail to make the Calder Cup playoffs. As the Hamilton Bulldogs, they missed the last four playoff seasons.

….Florida born and raised forward Andrew Yogan had a five game point scoring streak ended Sunday. With the IceCaps on a Professional Tryout Contract, Yogan had a goal and four assists in his first five games with the team.

….The goal for John Scott was his second of the season and his first at Mile One Centre.

1 pasquale II….The Sunday loss ended a four game win streak for goaltender Eddie Pasquale. In the four game win streak he allowed only five goals. He has now given up eight in his last five starts – a 1.6 average over the stretch.

….The IceCaps scored power play goals in each of the two weekend games giving them 18 in their last 74 opportunities, a 24.3% success rate. Their penalty killing has been equally good – 5 goals allowed in 65 times shorthanded – 93.3%.

….Eight members of this season’s IceCaps were in the Canadiens lineup vs. the Minnesota Wild Saturday night including defenseman Darren Dietz and forward Charles Hudon who were called up Friday.

….IceCaps head coach Sylvain Lefebvre was forced to leave the bench during the third period of Saturday’s game when he suffered a cut on the back of the head by an errant puck that bounced off the glass partition behind him.
