Game Notes

UPDATE -Against the Capitals Douglas Murray will replace Francis Bouillon on the third defence pairing.  He will play alongside Raphael Diaz.  At minus-10, Bouillon has the Canadiens worst defensive rating.  Alexei Emelin will again skate with Josh Gorges.  Subban and Markov remain the number one unit.

…….The forward lines remain intact.  Gallagher with Desharnais/Paciorety; Briere LW with Pacioretty/Gionta; Prust/Eller/Galchenyuk; White/Moen/Bournival.

……Michal Neuvirth will be in goal for Washington.  He’s 5-2-0 lifetime vs. the Canadiens with a 2.14 GAA and a .926 save%

…..Both teams are on back-to-back weekends.  The Canadiens return home to face Pittsburgh while Washington will play in Toronto Saturday night.  The Canadiens will be back in Washington to play the Capitals next Friday as part of another back-to-back weekend that will finish with a home game against Toronto.

…..The Canadiens are 3-4-2 in November, alternating wins and losses (3-1-1) in their last five games after starting the month with four straight losses.

…..Before their 6-2 win over Minnesota the Canadiens had lost seven of the previous 11 totaling only 19 goals.

…….Though the Capitals have won eight of the last nine against the Canadiens (7-2-1), the Canadiens have earned three points in their last two trips to Washington including a 4-1 win in their sole visit to Washington last season January 24th.

……Including the four the Canadiens scored in January, the Canadiens have managed a total of 12 goals the last nine times they’ve played the Capitals and were shutout three times in a row at one point. Only in that one game over the last 12 have the Canadiens scored more than two in a game

…… Washington  has posted a 7-2-1 record in its last 10 home games against Montreal. They have lost the last two meetings, both of those games at the Bell Centre.

…. Before they were shutout 4-0 at home by Pittsburgh Wednesday the Capitals were in a 7-1-1 stretch and had scored 12 goals during a three game winning streak.  They had also won six straight at the Verizon Center.

……Over their last two games the Capitals have been outshot 87-38.   In attempted shots in those two games their opposition had an attempted shot advantage 145-95.

….  Only the Colorado Avalanche have allowed fewer goals in the first period (9) than the Canadiens this season (10).

….The Canadiens have a league-worst 2-6-2 record in games decided by one goal.

….Only four teams have a worse winning percentage when allowing the first goal than Montreal (2-7-2).

…..The Canadiens at 0-7-1 are one of only five teams yet to win a game when trailing at the end of the second period.

…..Five of the Capitals 12 victories have come by way of shootouts.  In the Eastern Conference no other team has three.   The Canadiens have one.

….Max Pacioretty has never scored a goal in Washington in eight career visits.  He has four points in his last four overall games vs. the Capitals.  Pacioretty assisted on two of the four goals the Canadiens scored in Washington last January.

….After scoring just eight goals in his first 21 games last season, Alex Ovechkin has now scored 40 goals in his last 42 regular season games.

…… Ovechkin has registered 42 points in 37 career games against the Canadiens.  That includes 32 points (17g, 15a) in 30 career regular-season games and 10 points (5g, 5a) in the losing seven game playoff series against the Canadiens three years ago.

….Ovechkin has three goals with an assist in the last two meetings against the Canadiens.  Both of those games were at the Bell Centre last April.

….Washington has won nine games in a row when Ovechkin scores a goal.

…. The Capitals have given up 30 shots on goal 19 times in 22 games and have allowed a total of 771 shots, fifth most in the league and an average of 35.0 per game.   The Canadiens have given up the 10th highest shots total at 684, an average of 31.1 per game.

Peter Budaj makes his fifth start of the season.  All of his starts have been on the road.  He is 3-1-0 so far.  Over his last two seasons Budaj has a record of 11-2-1 as Carey Price’s backup.  In his career Budaj  against the Capitals 0-2-1 in four appearances with a 2.95 GAA and an .888 save pct.

….In eight appearances in November, Braden Holtby is 6-2-0, 2.32, .934. Holtby has a .935 save percentage over his last three starts despite facing an average of 41.3 shots.  Holtby stopped a career high 46 shots in a 4-1 win over St. Louis Sunday (shots were 47-20) before facing 40 shots Wednesday in the 4-0 loss to Pittsburgh.

….Washington backup Michal Neuvirth has a career 4-1-1 record against the Canadiens.  He was the losing goaltender in the Canadiens 4-1 win last January in Washington.  Neuvirth’s last start was November 9th, a 4-3 shootout loss in Phoenix.

….Washington’s special teams have broken down recently.  Their power play is 1 for 18 the last five games.  Their penalty killers have given up 4 goals the last 13 times shorthanded over the last three games.

… Eleven times this season Carey Price has faced more than 30 shots on goal.  His record in those games is 4-5-2, while his goals-against average is 1.89, and his save percentage is .947.

…. .In 15 career appearances against Washington Carey Price  is 4-8-3, 3.09, .897.
