There were no NHL takers for unrestricted free agent Chris Campoli so today he signed with the Geneva-Servette Eagles of the Swiss National League Thursday. Campoli was acquired by the Canadiens during last season’s training camp after it became clear that Andrei Markov’s surgically repaired knee was not ready to start the season. Campoli played in 43 games with Montreal last season.
Each Swiss League team is allowed eight “licences” to sign foreign-born players. Campoli takes up the final licence. During the lockout, the Canadiens Yannick Weber played with Geneva.
Campoli was one of the main NHLPA participants in the negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement during the lockout.
Still unsigned among last year’s Canadiens unrestricted free agents is Mathieu Darche. Darche is currently practicing with the New Jersey Devils under a Professional Tryout Contract.
