The Canadiens and New York Rangers observed the Wednesday noon hour deadline and exercised their newly negotiated right to place Scott Gomez and Wade Redden on waivers, the first step in the process of giving the players unrestricted free agency.
Gomez has ten million dollars coming to him over the final two seasons of the seven year contract he signed with the Rangers. His salary cap hit is 7.3 million.
There are a number of teams interested in signing Redden, who has been in the American Hockey League the last two seasons. Gomez’ prospects aren’t the same. After a four year decline in his game, the best he might be able to expect is a one year million dollar deal, much along the lines of the current Colby Armstrong contract, during which he can try to re-establish his NHL value.
