At the World Junior Hockey Championships in Ufa Russia, with a goal and assist in the USA’s 9-3 win over Slovakia Monday, Alex Galchenyuk moved up into a tie for second place with Jonathan Huberdeau in tournament scoring. Galchenyuk now has 2 goals and 5 assists in four games. The tournament scoring leader is Canada’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with eleven points.
The Canadiens other 2012 draft pick playing in the tournament, Sweden’s Sebastian Collberg (2nd round-33rd overall) added an assist to his total in Sweden’s 7-4 win over Finland. Collberg is currently tied for sixth with 3 goals and 2 assists after the four preliminary games. With the win, Sweden locked up the lead in Group”A” with 3 wins plus an overtime victory.
Canada won the “B” group with a perfect 4-0 record after their 4-2 win over Russia Monday.
In Davos Switzerland, Canada won the Spengler Cup for the first time since 2007 beating Davos 7-2 on Monday. After being left off the Davos roster in the tournament’s semi-final game, Canadiens defenceman Raphael Diaz was back in their lineup for the final and scored their second goal. Diaz, who leads all defenders in SNL scoring this season, was a pickup from Zug for the tournament.
…..In the East Coast Hockey League, the Alaska Aces beat Colorado 4-2. Scott Gomez missed his 4th straight game and eighth of the last nine with that lower body injury.
