13-Steve Quailer – Hamilton Bulldogs

Steve Quailer scored a power play goal with 3:47 remaining in the third period to break a 0-0 tie and give the Hamilton Bulldogs a 1-0 win over the Lake Erie Monsters.

The goal finally gave the crowd of 3,945 the opportunity to celebrate with the tossing of hundreds of stuff animals on the ice as part of the Bulldogs annual charity toy toss.    The goal came on the 71st shot on goal in the game.

Cedrick Desjardins stopped all 29 shots against the team for whom he played last season.  It was his second shutout of the season and his fifth win in seven starts.  The Bulldogs outshot the Monsters 45-29.  (Box score and Hamilton Individual Season Stats Below)

The winning goal came on an unassisted  effort as Quailer used his size to get a step on the defence and then  protected  the puck as fought off the defender and pushed  the puck past goaltender Calvin Pickard from in close.  It was his fourth goal of the season.

Outside of Desjardins,  Brendan  Gallagher had  another big night  with  seven  shots on goal.  Michael Blunden was again strong up front as well. Nathan Beaulieu was very strong moving the puck out of his own end and Frederick St. Denis  had another  one of his steady performances.

Notes –

……Special teams are a major issue for the Bulldogs.  They came into the game with the second last power play at 9.3 % (8-for-86).  They were 1-fpr-5 in the game.  Entering the game Hamilton’s penalty killing ranksed 20th, 82.2% (18 goals against in 101 times shorthanded). They killed off all three Lake Erie power plays in this game.

……Aaron  Palushaj appeared to suffer a right shoulder or arm injury when he fell to the ice under checking midway through the second period.   He finished the game but appeared to be favouring it.  Despite all that, Palushaj took six shots on Lake Erie goaltender Calvin Pickard.

……The Bulldogs will go back on the road for four more games starting Thursday against the Chicago Wolves Thursday.  at Rockford Illinois
