Tomas Plekanec scored the opening goal in a 3-1 win over Sweden at Finland’s annual Karjala Cup Tourament. The games are being played at Turku Finland. In the absence of Jaromir Jagr, former NHLer Peter Nedved played on the Plekanec line with Jiri Tlusty.
Along with Plekanec and Tlusty the NHLer’s in the Czech lineup includedMarek Zidlicky (Devils) and Winnipeg goaltender Ondrej Pavelec. Sweden’s only locked out NHLer was defenseman Victor Hedman. Mostly for reason’s of insurance costs many of the players are passing up the tournament.
The four team round robin tournament also includes Russia and the host team from Finland. Finland, with Nashville’s Pekke Rinne in goal, edged Russia 2-1 Wednesday. The Czechs will play Finland Friday and wrap up their tourmament against Russia on Saturday.
The Czechs have never won the tourament since it was founded in 1996.
