CANADIENS DIAZ & WEBER PLAY IN SWITZERLAND SATURDAY

Canadiens defensemen Raphael Diaz and Yannick Weber saw action with their respective Swiss National League teams Saturday.

Weber and his Geneva Eagles teammates edged Davos 5-4  before 7,135 at Les Vernets Arena in Geneva.  While Weber failed to register a point, San Jose’s Logan Couture had a goal and two assists, including an assist on the overtime winner.  Couture’s Sharks teammate Joe Thornton had an assist for Davos.  The Rangers Rick Nash also plays for Davos.  Geneva remains unbeaten at home this season.  They are 12-3-1 overall and hold a commanding 14 point lead over second place Zurich in the Swiss League standings.

In Kloten, EV Zug shut out the hometown Flyers 5-0.   Diaz, who is reportedly trying to play through some groin and hip problems, was held off the scoresheet once again.  He did pick up a holding penalty.   Detroit’s Henrick Zetterberg assisted on Zug’s fifth goal.

In Canadian Junior Hockey

……Saturday, Canadiens first round draft pick Alex Galchenyuk failed to get a point but the Sarnia Sting defeated the Erie Otters 4-1 Saturday afternoon.  The game was played at Erie Pennsylvania.

……The Western Hockey League’s Kamloops Blazers, with Habs 3rd round draft pick Tim Bozon beat the Victoria Royals to a 5-2  Friday night.     Bozon had a goal and two assists. Bozon is third in WHL scoring (behind two linemates) with 14 goals and 13 assists in 15 games. The Blazers have won twelve straight and have a record  of  14-0-1 to start their season.

…….In the Swiss National League Tuesday, Geneva-Servette (Weber) will play at Lugano and Zug (Diaz) will play host to
Biel.

…….Kladno Knights of the Czech Extraliga (Plekanec) will play Sparta Prague and 2011 Canadiens 6th round draft choice Daniel Pribyl at the Kladno Municipal Arena on Sunday.

…….In the KHL – Chekhov will travel 1500 kilometres southeast to the Ural city of Chelyabinsk to play Traktor.  Andrei Markov is not expected to play (bruised ribs).  Former Canadien Andrei Kostitsyn is on the Traktor roster.   Chelyabinsk has been called the “most contaminated city in the world” because of three separate nuclear disasters at the area’s Mayak Atomic Weapons facility in the 50’s and 60’s..   Ak-Bars Kazan (Emelin) will host the Moscow based Mytishchi Atlant on Tuesday.

…….In North America, the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs will host the Abbotsford Heat on Sunday at Copps Coliseum.

…….In the Junior hockey ranks -The OHL’s Sarnia Sting (Galchenyuk) move on to Brampton on Sunday.   Brady Vail and the Windsor Spitfires play at Owen Sound.   Both games scheduled for 2:00pm.   In the WHL, Kamloops (Bozon) will play the Thunderbirds at Seattle Sunday.
