EURO CANADIENS TUESDAY-Plekanec-Two Points Before Record Crowd in Prague

All six Canadiens players now playing in overseas are European, two each from Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Russia.  If the rumour mill is correct, that is about to change as teams lineup to add North American-born members of the Habs to rosters in Germany and Switzerland.

Five Canadiens saw action Tuesday night.

Kladno vs. Brno – Czech Extraliga Record Crowd October 23

In the Czech Republic, the Brno Komets defeated the Kladno Knights 4-2 before the largest crowd in the fifty year history of the Czech Extraliga, 17,140 at Prague’s O2 Arena.  Included were 6,000 fans who made the 185 kilometre trip from the Moravian city of Brno.  Tomas Plekanec ended a scoring drought with two assists.  He set up Canadiens teammate Tomas Kaberle on Kladno’s first goal after Brno had taken a 3-0 lead and then on Jaromir Jagr;s goal.  Kaberle has a goal in each of his last two games.  Plekanec has eight goals and ten assists in thirteen league games.

This was Kladno’s  third game at O2 arena this season.  Each game has drawn over 15,000.

In the Swiss National League –  Raphael Diaz had an assist as Zug lost a 3-2 penalty shot decision at Zurich.  Detroit’s  Henrick Zetterberg was held off the Zug scoresheet for the first time.

SNL leading Geneva defeated Fribourg 5-1 at home.  No points for Yannick Weber.  San Diego’s Logan Couture had a goal and two assists.  After fifteen games, Geneva now has a 15 point lead in the standings over second place Fribourg.

In the KHL – Ak Bars Kazan edged out Metallurg Novokuznetz 2-1 at home Tuesday night.  Former Canadiens draft pick (9th round – 2002) Konstantin Korneev scored the opening goal of a two goal third period Kazan comeback.  Former Canadiens defenseman Brent Sopel scored for Metallurg.  No points, one shot and 20:53 ice time for Alexei Emelin.

……The Czech Extraliga enters it’s 16th round of games with Kladno (Plekanec/Kaberle) due to host  the Ostrava Vitkovice Steelers on Friday.

…..In Switzerland on Saturday Zug (Diaz) will play the Flyers at Kloten.  Geneva-Servette (Weber) hosts Davos.

…..In the KHL – Vityaz Chekhov (Markov) will host Avangard Omsk Wednesday.  Ak-Bars Kazan (Emelin) will play Amur at the Eastern Siberian city of Khabarovsk on Wednesday.  At 6,000 kilometres and eight time zones, Chekhov to Khabarovsk is sports longest road trip in worldwide professional sports.  The city is located 30 kilometres from the Chinese boarder.    Khabarovsk’s nearest KHL rival is 3,000 kilometres to the west.
