MARLIES SHUT OUT BULLDOGS 5-0 – Louis Leblanc Injured

Oct 20th, 2012 | By | Category: Hockey-General News, St. John's IceCaps

The Hamilton Bulldogs are the American Hockey League’s second youngest team so one could easily assume that there would be nights like the team had at Toronto’s Ricoh Coliseum Saturday night.

With eight rookies in their lineup, including four on defense the Marlies steamrollered Hamilton 5-0.  Toronto scored on their first, second and fifth shots on goal before Robert Mayer was replaced in goal by Peter Delmas.

To compound the misery, former Canadiens first round draft pick Louis Leblanc suffered an injury to his right leg at 9:04 of the second period when he tangled with Marlie defenseman Jesse Blacker deep in the Toronto zone.  Leblanc fell awkwardly to the ice after engaging Blacker in a fight.  He had to be helped from the ice with a knee or ankle problem.  There has been no report on the injury’s seriousness but Leblanc did not return to the game.  He was not available after the game but team mate Gabriel Dumont told Canadian Press, “It’s never fun to see a guy get hurt like that.  His leg twisted pretty weird. It didn’t look good so it’s tough.”  Team doctors were to make a further assessment Sunday in Hamilton.

Kerry Ryan scored twice for the Marlies along with Mike Koska, Greg McKegg, and Nicolas Deschamps.  Jussi Rynnas recorded the shutout.  The Bulldogs outshot the Marlies 31-24.  (Box Score and Team Scoring Statistics Below)

There were ninety minutes in penalties handed out in the game including ten fighting majors.

Included in the crowd of 7,618 at Ricoh Coliseum were Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin, assistant GM Rick Dudley and head coach Michel Therrien.

For the record, the youngest team in the AHL is the Ottawa farm team in Binghamton New York.

Next on the Bulldogs schedule will be the Rochester Americans.  The game will be played in Buffalo Tuesday.

………In the Ontario Junior Hockey League Saturday night the Kitchener Rangers scored three unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Sarnia Sting 5-3.  Canadiens first round draft pick Alex Galchenyuk scored one of the Sarnia goals.  After 12 games Galchenyuk leads his team with 5 goals and 10 assists.
