Travis Moen Signs Four-Year 7.4 Million Dollar Contract With Canadiens

Of the nine players who played for the Canadiens last year and were facing unrestricted free agency at the end of the season, five have been signed for the coming season, three retained by the Habs.  Four more are awaiting contract offers, three weeks into the signing period.

Travis Moen, rejected unrestricted free agency to sign a 4 year 7.4 milion dollar contract (1.85 million per season).  The Canadiens also gave one year contracts to forwards Petteri Nokelainen and Mike Blunden.

Signed outside the organization are Hal Gill (2 years with Nashville), and Brad Staubitz (Anaheim-two years).

Still awaiting contract offers are Mathieu Darche, Andrei Kostitsyn plus defensemen Jaroslav Spacek and Chris Campoli.

Staubitz, Darche and Campoli fiinished the season on the Canadiens roster.  Gill was traded to Nashville at the deadline for a Blake Geoffrion, Robert Slaney and a 2nd round draft pick, received a two year four million dollar contract from the Predators, a pay cut of 250 thousand dollars from each of his three years with the Canadiens.  Teams seem to be less than excited about the possibility of having Andrei Kostitsyn on their team after his playoff shenanigans which led to a two game team-suspension during the playoffs.  The Canadiens traded Kostitsyn to Nashville at the deadline for 2013 second and fifth round draft picks.  Spacek went to Nashville in return for Tomas Kaberle in December.

P.K. Subban is a restricted free agent and also unsigned, although that is expected to be taken care of in the next week or so.   Sergei Kostitsyn, also an RFA, is taking the Nashville Predators to arbitration.  His hearing is set for August 2nd, but the Predators say they would like to settle with their leading scorer before then. (UPDATE – Predators avoid arbitration by signing Kostitsyn to a two year six million dollar contract)

Only three of the eleven unrestricted free agents on the Hamilton Bulldogs roster have also found new jobs.  Goaltender Nathan Lawson has signed a two-way contract with Ottawa and is ticketed for Binghamton.  Defenseman Garrett Stafford has a two-way one-year deal with Washington while veteran Alex Henry will play for Dusseldorf in the German Elite League this season.
