Six players from the Canadiens roster will be participating in the World Hockey Championships starting next weekend in Stockholm and Helsinki.

Forwards Tomas Plekanec (Czech Republic), Max Pacioretty (USA), Lars Eller (Denmark) and Petteri Nokelainen (Finland ) will be joined by P.K. Subban (Canada ) and Alexei Emelin (Russia) on defense.

Nokelainen won a gold medal as part of Finland’s world championship team last year.   It was his first appearance in the tournament.  ,

This will be Plekanec’s fifth trip to the World tournament. He also part of the Czech team at the Vancouver Olympics.  In four tournaments and 35 games Plekanec has scored 13 goals and 12 assists.

Emelin will be participating in his fourth consecutive championship.  It was at last year’s event in Switzerland that general manager Pierre Gauthier persuaded him to finally sign a Canadiens contract.

Eller will play for Denmark for the third time.    Subban and Pacioretty will be making their first appearance.  Subban has played for Canada at two world junior championships and Pacioretty was at the world juniors once, playing in six games without a point.

Subban’s presence for the opening game Friday against Switzerland is up in the air because of an lower body injury he suffered in an exhibition game against the Swiss over the weekend.  The injury is not related to the back problems that plagued him throughout the season.   He’s listed as day-to-day.

According to Andrei Markov, he wasn’t invited to play for Russia probably because of conditioning issues.  Carey Price had that late season concusssion and took himself out of the running.  Rafael Diaz was a likely candidate for the Swiss National team but suffered a groin injury late in the season.  Yannick Weber has an injury problem as well.   Erik Cole declined the US invitation for family reasons which include watching his daughter play the Cowardly Lion in a school production of the ‘Wizard of Oz”.  Cole has been to the tournament three times.
