Hamilton head coach Guy Boucher turned out to be one of the Canadiens’ major assets. There are going to be three or four players with them next season, who were developed by Boucher last season. As a matter of fact, seventeen members of the Bulldogs were called up a various times during the season to help stem the tide of injuries that plagued the team all season.
Still, with Jacques Martin ensconced in the head coach’s office at the Bell Centre, the best Boucher could hope for was another year in Hamilton. Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier could have forced the issue, but gave Boucher permission to try to better himself in the role of NHL head coach. After turning down an offer from the Columbus Blue Jackets, Boucher elected to take over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
